BT to increase prices to fund fibre optic broadband expansion they're showcasing as UK lags behind rest of Europe:
>> UK Internet Service Provider, Talk Talk which is owned by Carphone Warehouse is due to present to Ofcom and the Government, a report which shows that BT is being allowed to become one of Europes most expensive broadband providers to ISPs.
Ofcom has proposed that BT can increase prices by 22% over the next 3 years and Talk Talk have pointed out that these increases will need to be passed on to customers. They also claim that the price increases may lock as many as 1.8 million people out of the market. BT have said that the price rises are justified as they need to invest in a fibre optic network which is dependant on the making a good return on their copper network.
>> BT is to open two broadband specific stores in Whitchurch, near Cardiff and in Muswell Hill in London. They intend to use the stores to showcase their new fibre optic broadband services. These services are currently being trialled in these areas and the outlet will allow BT to show residents the advantages of fibre optic broadband.
>> The latest rankings of European countries in regard to Fibre-To-The-Home/Premises (FTTH/P)has been released by the FTTH Council of Europe at the Broadband World Forum in Paris. Top in Europe is Sweden with more than 10% penetration followed by Norway, Slovenia and Denmark.
France, Germany and the UK still have not entered the top 10. The ranking shows the percentage of homes which receive broadband communications via direct fibre optic connections.
>> uSwitch.com has said that bundling together broadband, digital TV and home phone services can be beneficial to customers and could result in more convenience and lower costs. Currently 64% of homes already have more than one service from the same provider and 20% of customers are planning on bundling their services over the next 12 months. †
