Welcome:   Broadband News Update: SKY Not Happy

Sky, unlike their rivals, are not happy about price fixing and everyone's passing the buck on illegal file sharing:

>> A study by Gartner has revealed that a roll out of fibre optic broadband could result in a bandwidth divide with urban areas enjoying better coverage and faster speeds than rural areas. They fear that rural based businesses may be at a disadvantage to their urban counterparts.

In addition, the divide could extrapolate across countries. Governments in some countries may find themselves forced to use public funds to ensure their local businesses do not suffer in a worldwide market.

>> Digital TV provider Sky have said that they are not happy about Ofcom's plans to regulate the prices at which they can sell their premium channels to rival providers. They say that the regulator should not be able to place price controls on the market. They prefer to use a retail model to sell their premium channels including Sky sports and movies.

Meanwhile both Virgin Media and BT have backed Ofcom's plans. They claim it will lead to a more competitive arena for customers as they will be able to compete with Sky on a level footing. It would also lead to the availability of premiums channels at a lower price for the consumer.

>> Government plans to tackle illegal file sharing could lead to increased costs for internet services, it has been claimed by BT. They say that if the onus of policing the web is placed on providers it could cost up to £1m per day which would lead to £24 per year being added to the price of broadband services for each customer. They say that the music industry should tackle the problem themselves. † [last update: 20.09.09]
