As BT struggles to just get everyone up to 2mbps new contenders are coming in hard:
>> BT has announced plans to double the reach of it's network giving 75% of UK homes and businesses access to fast broadband. Currently just 40% of the country is covered.
The governments "Digital Britain" campaign has said that everyone should have access to at least 2mbps by 2012. BT currently covers the majority of UK homes but in practise the speeds are much lower than the hoped for 8mbps due to the distance to the exchange.
>> Fibre City is giving Bournemouth residents the opportunity to use it's new fibre optic infrastructure, which is claimed to be the fastest available in the UK at 100mbps. Various ISPs and content providers have signed up to sell services through the Fibrecity portal which consumers will have access to through a set top box and router. Customers will be able to choose the provider they want to use through an online system. Bournemouth are the first to use the system which Fibrecity hope will offer real choice for the first time.
>> Research by ISPreview.co.uk has found that 89.9% of people believe that their broadband is well protected and 78% say that they have all the necessary anti-virus and firewall software in place. However two thirds had still been affected by viruses in the past.
86% of people also admit that they are the person that is most responsible for the protection of their computer and internet connections not the provider. † [last update: 04.10.09]
